We’re Back!

Looks like we made it!  We made it home from the miami antique show and what a show it! Here are our thoughts…
Not surprisingly, the supply of antique and art deco jewelry was lacking, especially pristine antique engagement rings.  The amount of people that came out for the show proved everyone wants antiques!  What that means for the dealers (and more specifically the antique shoppers) is the less antique jewelry, prices will still stay high.  How about diamonds?

Diamonds are still very strong, but we did notice that our friends from the far east, specifically China and India, were in short supply.  This means diamonds specifically purchased for the far east have softened a bit. How about diamonds for the united states? For example, the SI1 and SI2 type diamonds?  Well, unfortunately those diamonds are in low supply so they have stayed strong.

We were satisfied with the miami show.  Please take a look at our site, www.artdecodiamonds.com in the next few weeks, as we will have about 50 to 100 more antique and art deco engagement rings.

We Will See You in a Few!

This is our last blog before we leave for the Miami antique show. We thought it would be appropriate to blog about something very important to us, not antique engagement rings or diamonds, but the march of the NY Giants to the super bowl!
You ask, why should a diamond/antique jewelry site want to blog about the ny giants?  Well, we are so impressed with the Giants, especially Tom Couglin and his coaching staff. When the giants were in the midst of a 4 game losing streak, everyone wanted to fire Coughlin. Instead of changing his philosophy about football and life, he stuck to his beliefs and held the giants together.  Wouldn’t you know it, the giants started to believe as well, and now they’re one step away from winning a super bowl.
At artdecodiamonds.com we have the same philosophy.  We buy fantastic quality diamonds and gorgeous art deco jewelry. We keep on buying and selling jewelry and diamonds and the quality always remains, after the price has long been forgotten.  We will continue the blog after the Miami show.

Antique Show News!

Its that time of year again! The sun, the beaches, and the hot weather. But, I am not referring to vacation, I am talking about the Miami antique show. Yes, it’s here, the big antique show, and we must aske ourselves 2 important questions:
Question # 1: What will be the supply, and prices, of fine antique jewelry, especially antique engagement rings.
Question 2: Where are diamond prices going? Diamond prices have stayed very strong, but with some weakness in the far east market, can prices sustain themselves?
The miami antique show is a very important show because it gives dealers a sense of availability, and where diamond and antique prices are going. Are there going to be alot of antique engagement rings and diamonds in the market? Are we going to see a lot of dealers throughout the world, especially dealers from the far east, buying? Or, is it going to be a quiet time throughout the year? Stay tuned

History and Diamonds!

We all want to be part of history.  Since we can’t go back, why not buy a piece of history!? This past week Liz Taylor’s diamond and estate jewelry went on sale at Christies auction. What a show it was!  Just like at Jackie Onassis’ jewelry auction, people want to own a part of history, and so they will pay the price.  Elizabeth Taylor’s 33.00 carat diamond went for 8.8 million dollars!  Smaller items, such as charm bracelets, sold for 10 times the estimated amount.  Customers also purchased clothing and accessories, anything to touch hollywood glamour.
We find that during a terrible recession money seems to come out of the closet in order to purchase hollywood royalty, or political royalty in Jackie O’s case. When we can purchase hollywood royalty money comes out and then goes into hiding.   But, we must add that part of the proceeds will go to something close to Liz’s heart…aids research.

White or Yellow Decisions!

Back in the good old days (of the 1970′s and 80′s), who can remember when women all over the world were wearing yellow gold jewelry. Even in the art deco and vintage years, yellow gold was still popular. Well, as the years progressed, and the late 80′s and 90′s came upon us, yellow gold was ushered out, and in came white gold and platinum (which actually always was in style). Antique engagement rings, and antique, art deco jewelry had to be white. However, I have seen a change in the last few years where our old friend “yellow” has decided to make a reappearance. Mind you, platinum and white gold are still popular, but many of our customers seem to be requesting antique engagement rings that are yellow.

How long will this last? No one knows for sure but the last resurgence of yellow lasted 20 years! Stay tuned for our next blog. Happy Holidays!

The Dish on Diamonds!

In our last blog, I stated that old is hot, but i made a mistake! Old has always been hot, but is now really starting to sizzle. Celebrities have been wearing antique jewelry for years. Lets take a peak at whos wearing what.
Barbra Streisand has worn antique jewelry and art deco rings for years starting with “funny girl.”  We actualy saw a sneaky Barbra last year dressed down, with dark sunglasses, at the fall Miami antique show looking for antique and vintage jewelry.
Elizabeth Taylor, after receiving large diamonds from her hubby richard burton, loved antique jewelry. Other celebrities at the oscar shows that have caught the vintage and
art deco jewelry buzz include: Nicole Kidman, Sharon Stone, Mandy Moore, Carey Mulligan, Penlope Cruz, Diane Lane, Kate Winslet and Jessica Biel, to name just a few.
When celebrities are wearing antique and estate jewelry, the regular public buyers are going to flock to antique jewelry.
So, I guess what is old really IS hot!

Antique Diamond News!

Well the small miami antique show happened and, as I suspected, we had some good moments, and some not so good moments.

Let me explain:

As I touched upon in our last post, the global world diamond market is going through some changes. The far east market (specifically India), has slowed down considerably, which should halt the rise in prices…at least temporarily.  China’s market has also slowed a bit, but they are still showing tremendous buying power with items such as watches, diamonds and art deco jewelry.  We will have to wait and see how that plays out.
So, how does this decrease effect the U.S. market?  For one, it should stop the rise in diamond prices which would give the U.S. consumers a much needed break. However, when prices tend to stop rising the world markets hold back their supplies in order to keep prices from falling. Our big question is, how are the art deco jewelry and antique engagement ring prices? The prices are still very strong and holding.  Pristine antique engagement rings are still very hard to  find and are in demand.  We also see china’s interest in antique jewelry rising.  It seems like everyone wants art deco jewelry and antique engagement rings. I guess old is hot!  With demand high and supply short, the prices for antique engagement rings, art deco jewelry and antique jewelry are holding.

Important Questions to Think About

It’s that time of the year when the small miami antique show happens.
However, this year we are attending the show with a couple of
questions and concerns. Our first concern is, how will the supply of
fine antique engagement rings and antique jewelry be? Our next
concern is, should we buy for the upcoming season, given the current
state of the united states and world’s economy? In addition, we are
concerned with what will the going prices be for fine antique
jewelry. We are also questioning the volatility of the world diamond
market. For example, is the far east market(china and india) slowing
down? Is the american market making a come back? And, what about the
Japanese market. Is the diamond and antique market copying the gold
market with alot of up and
down movement of the past couple of weeks? Stay tuned and check out
our next blog post.

Inside Scoop in Diamond News!

With the stock market taking a nose dive, and the real estate market swooning throughout the country, consumers are turning to diamonds, antique jewelry and gold to get them through this rough period.  With contagion spreading throughout banks in the world, and consumers earning very little interest on their money in the bank, people are fleeing to the safety of the antique jewelry market; specifically antique engagement rings, art deco engagement rings and fine antique jewelry. It seems consumers are also putting their money into hard assets such as diamonds and gold. With such demand going on throughout the world, the price of jewelry is skyrocketing. Please stay tuned as we will be keeping a close eye on all three markets.  Our guess is, as long as there is trouble throughout the world, all these assets will continue to rise.
